Rise Above Life’s Challenges: How to Build Inner Resilience and Thrive
It’s Mental Health Week and few concepts have been linked more to mental health over the last couple years than resilience.
Resilience is a fundamental quality that helps us thrive. It’s what allows us to pick ourselves up after a setback, dust ourselves off, and keep moving forward towards our goals.
Or at least get our selves out of the rut.
But what exactly does it mean to be resilient? And how can we cultivate this quality within ourselves?
At its core, resilience is made up of two key components. The first is the most familiar; the ability to bounce back from adversity. Life is full of challenges, setbacks, and unexpected events that can knock us off course. Resilient people are able to recover from these experiences quickly. Often, resilient people appear to have seemingly minimal damage to their mental and emotional well-being as they have developed skills to help them through tough times.
The second component of resilience is the capacity to learn from our past experiences. Resilient people are able to take the lessons they’ve learned from past challenges and apply them to new situations. They’re able to adapt and grow, even in the face of difficult circumstances. In that way, resilient people are able to view all challenges as growth opportunities, or ways to make them more resilient.
Why is resilience so important? For one, it helps us maintain a positive outlook and stay motivated, even in the face of setbacks. Resilient people seem better equipped to handle stress and anxiety, which is linked to positive mental health and well-being. Additionally, resilient people may be better able to navigate challenge and change in their personal and professional lives, as they navigate the ups and downs of life and stay focused on their goals.
The two factors, bouncing back and learning from challenges are inextricably linked. If you have a mindset that you can learn from challenges, that in itself leads to a more resilient mindset.
If you think this is an area where you or someone you love could use some support, there is hope!
