Psychological safety is the belief that one will not be punished or embarrassed for speaking up with ideas, questions, concerns or mistakes. When I ask workshop participants what helps build psychological safety on teams, they talk about team-building exercises, off-site retreats, or regular team lunches, all which can help employees feel more comfortable opening up and sharing their ideas with one another. When staff feel they are supported by their colleagues, they will be more willing to take risks and try new things.

Fostering psychological safety can also improve productivity. Employees that feel comfortable expressing their thoughts and ideas are more likely to take ownership of their work and take initiative. They are also more likely to collaborate and share their knowledge with one another. This leads to more efficient problem-solving and improved team decision-making.
